If they'd have done Jericho - Danielson and tried this angle, would it have worked? No, because it wouldn't have evoked such spectacular smark rage over Danielson being treated as a rookie, because Jericho genuinely is a veteran and a legend.
Also, The Miz CAN help him, in that he possesses a far superior look and mic skills, which he can help Danielson on.

This! This! This!!!!!! If they'd have built Danielson up to be a real veteran of wrestling, given him everything easy and to the liking of the smarks then he wouldn't be getting over in the WWE with the real marks. Doing what they have done acomplishes many things.
1. It makes the smarks hate TheMiz more and want to see Danielson kick his ass.
2. It makes him the underdog without totally ignoring his history or diminishing him and making a face the underdog is the easiest way to put them over to the marks in the beginning.
3. It imediately sets up an out for him. Once he's "ready" they'll move him into a real fued with TheMiz perhaps for the US title and it allows The Miz to learn in the ring and Bryan to learn out of the ring.
4. As a result of 4, they don't have to have Bryan win NXT, this way they can build another star (like Gabriel for instance) without having to throw Bryan down our throats as the best on the show.
these are just a few examples.
As for my own thoughts on who'll stick around after this. Bryan, Gabriel, Ortunga and perhaps Darren Young.
I don't think much of the others. Slater isn't ready, they rushed him in, Skip Sheffield is a redkneck version of santino with bigger muscles, he's a joke wrestler and I don't think it'll last, Jericho's ***** is entirely forgetable (Burchill was a better British wrestler and he's gone) and Tarver isn't getting much exposure thus far making me care very little for him already.

Skip Sheffield is the kind of joke wrestler who no one laughs at. In fact, more of a joke of a wrestler, rather than a joke wrestler. He is easily the most irritating on screen character they have ever had on TV - I'd rather watch a Vickie Guerrero marathon than see another second of Sheffield.

I would love to have Darren Young shave his head and join the SES, but I don't feel like he deserves to win NXT. Not quite there yet IMO.
