  • Frequently Asked Questions
If you rename and number your music tracks the PSP will play them in the order
    you want. example:

    01 American Idiot
    02 Boulervard Of Broken Dream's

If you don't number them the PSP will list them in alphabetical order. Lol I
    tried

    --PS2BOX

This won't work. I have had numbered tracks and they still do not display in
order. Use an m3u file like I described earlier. It seems PSP was designed for
them since it displays "m3u" on the group icon. You can create playlists with
Winamp. If you want your music listed in a certain order then create a m3u
file and drop it in the folder. The folders music will then be listed in the
order of the m3u playlist and it will be named the same as the m3u file.

    --.callidus.

Thats the method I'm using now and it works just fine. Each album has its own
folder and I number each song 01 to whatever and they display/play in order
when I run them on my PSP. It works, just put the numer 01 track name.
It will play them in order.

    --PS2BOX

You can rename your movie files to whatever you want...as long as they begin
with the letter/number combo "M4V" and end with any 5 numbers (with the proper
extension, too, of course). For instance, if you have a .mp4 file
named "M4V39671.mp4", you can change the name to "M4V00001.mp4" and the PSP
will still recognize it. An even more useful tip regarding movie file renaming
is that your PSP will list whatever movies you have on it in numerical order,
depending on the numbers after the "M4V" in the filename. Regarding the .thm
files that the 3GP Converter makes whenever you convert a movie...as many of
you already know, this is a thumbnail pic of whatever frame is showing a few
seconds into your movie, and it's displayed on the home screen next to
whatever you named your movie before conversion as long as you put it into the
same folder as your movie (and as long as it has the same filename...with
a ".thm" extension, of course). As some of you may not know, the .thm image
can be edited using PhotoShop, PhotoImpact, or certain other image-editing
software. In my experience (with PhotoImpact), I make a pic that I want to
represent a certain movie (in the proper dimensions...160 X 120), then I open
up the .thm file created by the 3GP Converter when I made my movie. At that
point, I simply drag the image I made onto the .thm file and merge it, then
save the .thm file that way. PS2BOX...that method works just fine for me, too.

    --kazimoko

I haven't seen this tip... just ignore it if it was already mentioned. Your
MP3s can have thumbnails as well as your movies though it is a bit more
complicated than editing a THM file. In Windows, the simplist way I found
(even easier than using 3rd party programs IMO) is to open your song in
Windows Media Player and find it in your library. -- I have all my songs in my
WMP library but if your song is not there just add it with the button on the
bottom left-- Right click the song in the library and choose "Advanced Tag
Editor", choose the "Picture" tab, and load any pictures file into there. The
first photo on the list will appear as the song's thumbnail on your PSP. As a
little extra bonus the thumbnail for the first song in your playlist is also
the thumbnail for the directory the song is in. Basically I have my MP3
directories on my PSP divided between different albums, each with an image of
their respective album cover as their thumbnail.

    --houston3000

Press and hold select on an image to set it as the background. The image will
go away whenever you access anything else on the PSP, ie listen to music, play
    a game, watch a video.

    --Matthew9559

Hold the power button up for about 3 seconds, and it powers the system off!

    --FloridaGamer

Hold in the music button to mute the system. Hold in the screen button to turn
    off the screen.

    --jeremytodd1

when looking at a picture, hold the SQUARE button and use the analog nub to
zoom in and out. very cool for comics

    --ashxx

There are four levels of brightness to the PSP screen, but the highest level
is only available while the ac adaptor is plugged into the unit.

    --andyne

while viewing a picture, press triangle then go to "view mode" and you will
automatically zoom in on each picture that you have. or download a program
called infranview, and you can do a batch conversion to get all of your pics
to the native 480x272 resolution. btw, you can hit menu OR select if you want
to "set the background image" as explained above. this also works while
playing music (your music will continue playing) and watching a movie of the
memory stick (the movie will pause and the current frame will be set as
a 'background') i also like the one where you turn the parental control level
to 1, with your password at 0000, so that it asks you for your password every
time you start up a game. when you start up, you can then press X to play
game, or circle to go to the menu, instead of automatically starting a game
when there is one inserted. thanks whoever came up with that one thanks for
the m3u tip i dont need a wul edit: when youre in the music/movie/photo mode,
press triangle and go to the "?" (help). it explains the controls fairly well.

    --evan217

You don't have to remove the disc from the UMD case to play them...in fact,
this usually results in a malfunction. Cover the screen with the microfiber
cloth before placing in the case.

    --IndustryLeech

Do not remove the UMD disc from the UMD case. It is suppose to be in the D
shaped case, I know people personally and have read stories of people doing
this and figure since people who are gonna buy a PSP and are reading this
    thread might want to know.

    --Cerebral_Assassin990

The analog nub can be removed. All you need to do is pull it back and it
snaps, so if you get anything sticky or bothersome under there, you just pull
the nub out, clean it, and snap it back in.

    --nico002

when you connect the psp to the computer, make sure you select the usb option
at the main screen or the computer won't read it.

    --projay

The PSP can only support Pro Duo or Duo stick formats. The regular memory
sticks won't fit into the system.

    --Jharper12456

Keep wireless switch off when not in use, it will save tons of battery.

    --Xeneize12

To enter "Sleep Mode", slide the power switch up and immediately release.
Typically, as long you don't hold the switch for two seconds or more, you will
enter sleep mode. To exit sleep mode, simply slide the power switch up again
and release quickly. Sleep mode is a great way to conserve battery power when
you need to put your PSP down and a save point isn't nearby.

    --mfutter

If you have the UMD Demo Disc, it will load into the game menu for all the
videos of the games. If you press Home on the PSP and go to Music or Videos,
you will also get trailers for upcoming movies and music videos. I know this
is obvious but I just learned it 2 days ago. GO ME! EDIT: The nub can be
popped off so that if need be you can clean it or add a larger nub

    --NightVision

do not use toothpaste to clean scratches off of psp screen this will result in
    more tiny scratches

    --knifeman1

if you converted a widescreen video into PSP format and play it on your PSP,
it might appear squished. to solve this, while playing click triangle, and
highlight "screenmode" then keep pressing X until "fullscreen" is highlighted.
This should stretch out the video to its normal form. if you want to upload
any text files (i uploaded an mga and thug2r guide), then simply download a
text-to-jpeg converter (the link below has a few, i use jpegbook) this will
take your .txt file and convert it into a series of jpeg images (you can
choose a background and font/size/colour). if you are having trouble figuring
out what controls do what in picture/video viewer, just click triangle and
click "help" (the question mark), this will show you a diagram that reveals
    what buttons do what.

    --higherscore

Here's is one. Hit the Home button and choose to end the Game before taking
the UMD out. It's not good to just open the UMD cover while the Disc is
    spinning.

    --fell-off-the-truck

Screen Up-keep tip: You can really reduce the number of scratches you put on
your screen by first blowing excess dust off of your screen THEN using your
microfiber cloth to gently clean it. Seems like a no brainer but even the
slightest specks of dust can cause noticeable scratches when you wipe it down.
P.S. Most surf shops or Sunglass vendors have extra microfiber bags lying
around that will just give them to you if you ask them!

    --burkhimer

Becareful of what screen protector you buy. Some DO NOT use static cling but
rather a glue. These ones usally come in a PSP Bundle. And when trying to be
taken off glue residue is left behind. There was a letter from sony sent to
all Gamestops about this. Hope you caught this befor you put the glue one on.

    --sterlingsxe

Do not use Windex or anything with ammonia to clean the screen. Buy an LCD
screen cleaner. Products with ammonia or weird chemicals will decolor the LCD
screen in no time (It will burn the plastic overtime).

    --Xeneize12

Before you wipe the screen off with the soft cloth, ALWAYS blow on it first to
get rid of any dust particals that could be sitting on it. Wiping dust across
    the screen = scratches

    --CooCooKozTnT

Here's a couple, if you need to check the time at any point during the game
press the home button. The time is displayed in the upper right hand corner
(along with Battery remaining info and volume level). To get back to the game
just press "x" or the home button again. Here's a Ridge Racer specific tip. If
you want to get straight into the main menu, skipping the mini game, go to
Options>Mini Game. Under the setting sub-menu press left or right on the d-pad
to select the image of the red circle with a line through it. Then select OK.
This stops NEW RALLY-X from starting everytime you boot up.

    --Dex128

If you want to scan for wireless routers/access points go to network update >>
New Connection and push right on the d-pad and down bottom slect scan.

    --ssjxbox

A couple of random things: When in very dark rooms, switch the brightness
setting to the lowest setting to reduce eye fatigue. It will actually make the
screen look a lot better and easy to see with the reduced strain. Don't switch
it to Sleep Mode while any game is saving or doing an autosave, or you may
    lose or corrupt the data.

    --LanMan_themovie

Go to: settings > system settings > battery information and you can see the
EXACT amount of time it will take your PSP to run out of battery (2:14) And
you can see the charge level.

    --patwalls99

Press Triangle in movies, music or pictures to bring up a list of helpful
    commands.

    --shoneyboy123

If you want to edit your Movie thumbnail pics, just change the THM extension
to JPG. You can then edit it and change it back to THM when you are done.

    --DCmina

In conjunction with DCmina's post, to change the extension back to .THM files
use Windows Explorer: Tools -> Folder Options -> View tab -> UNCHECK "Hide
extensions for known file types" -> Apply -> OK Then change the jpeg file
to .thm. Also, when smoothing out a screen protector wrap your credit card
with a cloth so it won't scratch the screen protector.

    --hornymonkey

the best way to clean your screen is to use a slightly damp glass cloth and
gently rub your screen after your done that take the dry side and dry your
screen (for those who do knot know this already of course)

    --constandino

Having trouble converting pesky video files for viewing on PSP? Some programs,
such as PSP Video 9, have a tough time with .MOV or .WMV files. Well, I have
an easy solution. Go to this link and download Rad Video Tools for free. Use
this to convert those troublesome files to .AVI's. Everything should slide
onto your PSP without a hitch after that.

    http://www.radgameto...com/bnkdown.htm

    --buffyoda

When having the ear phones plugged in, you can press the music button to
change the equalizer mode. It makes movies and music sound much better.

    --AiReCkOrEsSaL

If you want to start playing your music without even taking your PSP out of
your pocket/pouch, leave it in sleep mode with the selection on "music". To
start playing music press play on the remote once to wake it up and then once
again to get the music going. Set it to use autosleep on the shortest time so
you don't waste battery life. To stop the music just press pause on the remote
and the PSP should fall asleep again on its own. Keep your PSP on "hold" (but
not the remote) so it doesn't wake up accidentally.

    --smeagol88

when you can't connct to the wireless internet make sure the WLAn switch is
on. Or, when you are holding your PSP, make sure you have the wriststrap
through your wrist, so if you drop it, you can catch it with your wrist
    easily.

    --WhiteHawk849

Of all the parts on the PSP, try not to get the analog stick dirty/dusty,
because it's hard to get it off of the rough surface.

    --Elmnt61

The backround color of your PSP changes by the month. Download the demo of
IPSP (just google search it). Buy a screen protector You can change change the
time of or turn off the automatic sleep mode in the systems menu You can web
browse by hacking Wipeout Pure Make sure to set your PSP's clock for the
Spring time change Extra Credit: If you have MGA, type in JEHUTY as a password
    to unlock a special card

    --roboto1994

#1: You can change the background color 12 different ways by changing the
    month of the current date.

    Jan: Silver
    Feb: Yellow
    Mar: Green
    April: Pink
    May: Dark Green
    June: Light Purple
    July: Aqua Blue
    Aug: Blue
    Sept: Dark Purple
    Oct: Gold
    Nov: Brown
    Dec: Red

#2: If you have a large JPEG picture on your PSP, you can zoom in, and the
pixels should become bigger. Wait a few seconds, however, and the PSP will
automatically refocus the resolution of the picture.

    --Ne3dles

on umd movies there is an 2+ volume option in the menu

    --jesse_14

You remember those Pelican disc sleeves that came with the face armor and
scratched your UMDs? Well they don't really scratch them. Okay, take your UMD
sleeve and set it on the table flat-side down. Now take your UMD and start
pushing it into the sleeve SLOWLY. *Here is the most important part* Push down
on the UMD firmly and slide it in, it should be scratch free (no it doesn't
get scratched on it's way out) I will accept WULs.

    --ssjxbox

When the system is in hold, the remote headphone included in pack can still
    have control.

    --virozir

Set the parental control to 1. Enter a "0000" password. Now, if you boot up
the PSP with a UMD, you can either press "X" to start the game, or "O" to go
to menu. Useful so that you don't have to pop the disc out (or load it and
exit) just to get to the menu.

    --Rileq1

If you try to put a screen protector on your PSP and you have bubbles, do NOT
use a credit card to push them out. Instead, wrap the microfiber cloth around
the credit card first and then push them out to avoid scratches on the
    protector. Peace and Love!

    --MorlokMan

Hey Everyone, I see that some of you have mentioned screen protectors, but
with some of them I've seen I notice there can be lots of dust that gets
trapped in between the screen and the protector. It happens when you have a
lot of dust or airbourne particles around. Now that it's spring, im sure itll
    get worse

To fix this, get a new screen protector, and take your psp and the protector
in the shower with you. No, not in the shower shower, but in the bathroom. Now
take a really hot shower, leaving your beloved psp nearby (somewhere DRY) and
when you're finished, all of the steam will make the dust settle. Now apply
the protector and you should see nothing stuck in between.

    --mderemick

This might be on here already, but I cant read through them all to double
check. This thread rocks. You can use a Round Altoids Sours can as a case for
3 UMD's. They fit in perfectly so they dont rattle around. Just make sure you
clean the candy and dust out first. You can find them for $1.25 a can which is
pretty good for a case that holds 3 UMDS. You can even fit 5, but that takes a
little forcing, its best for 3.

    --DantesForum1

those altoids cases are a prett snug fit, but there is a little bit of wiggle
room where the umds rattle.. and for MY umds its a real problem because i took
the plastic holders off od them so they are just small cd's and rattle around
    and scratch quite a bit.

    --begend
